Viewpoint: City schools say thank you

May 7, 2011
The Marietta Times

On behalf of the Marietta City Schools' Board of Education, the faculty, staff and administration please allow me to extend a sincere thank you for your support of public education in the city of Marietta. Your passage of our recent school levy issue has insured that we now will move our programming forward, and the "slide" we anticipated will not occur. The needs of your/our children will always remain our priority, but those needs will now not need to be balanced with a shortage of funds. Thank you.

What comes next? Our promise to you to spend your tax dollars wisely is one of our first priorities. As many of you know, at the monthly BOE meeting the treasurer presents a "financial report" detailing every dollar that has come into the district as well as every dollar that has been spent. I would like to personally invite you to attend those meetings. Additionally, I will discuss with the treasurer the possibility of posting the financial reports on the district web page. It is our desire to provide any and all community members, who desire, the opportunity to review and ask questions about any portion of our income or our spending.

Finally, I would like to extend opportunities to those community members who desire an opportunity to participate in the governance of our schools to do just that. We are a public entity. You have that right and we have that obligation. There are many ways to become involved and depending on your interests and desires I would welcome that involvement. We are much stronger together than we are apart. Call me, e-mail me, have coffee with me. Connect to our schools in whatever way you see fit.

And for those of you who believe that constructive criticism is best relayed and received by "blogging," believe me it is not. An opportunity currently exists, as a community, to build and not to destroy our city schools. Join us and make a difference in the education of children. Help us do the best job possible. We need you.

Marietta City Schools invites you to join us in the education of your children. I encourage you to share your thoughts and ideas. Please contact me at ma_bthomas@seovec.org.

Bruce Thomas is the superintendent of the Marietta City Schools and can reached at ma_bthomas@seovec.org.
