I offer my condolences to the families of former Marietta Mayor Jim Schweikert and former Congressman Clarence Miller, who both passed away recently. I was especially well-acquainted with Jim Schweikert as he was a high school classmate of my dad's, and his daughter, Jana, was my sister's best friend growing up.
In a year when we've lost far too many great community and civic leaders, these join that list. I well remember Clarence Miller as a fixture in the U.S. Congress; he was always very attentive to the needs of his constituents, and was a role model in that sense. My sister, Laura Fulton, was an LBJ Summer Fellow in the office of Congressman Miller during the period when I worked in Washington.
Jim Schweikert served Marietta as mayor and as a city councilman. He was a small business owner and a veteran of our Armed Forces. Jim would frequently call me with advice regarding the affairs of the city and I always appreciated his insights. I know losing a treasured family member creates wounds that are hard to heal. I am so sorry for his family, but want them to know how much his service was appreciated.
