For the ones that were in Marietta on Saturday, May 12, at around 1 p.m. you may have wondered what all the sirens and motorcycles were all about. It was the 19th Annual Marietta Area Teddy Bear Ride sponsored by the Goldwing Road Riders Association Chapter A3 Marietta.
The ride formed at Hometown Honda on Pike Street where Hometown had their grill fired up and furnished the participants with burgers and hot dogs and sodas. The ride has been growing in popularity the last few years and as the ones in Marietta saw the ride was helped through traffic in Marietta by the Marietta Police Department and then the sheriff's office played an important part by leading up the riders group by escorting the ride through the Washington County. We also had help from Dunham Township fire departments and Barlow Township fire departments. Then we met back up with Marietta Police Department to escort us to Marietta Memorial Hospital where the ride ended when we all turned over the Teddy Bears and cash we had gathered for the event. Harry Irvine, of Belpre, went out of his way this year to make sure the ride would be as safe as possible by having the sheriff's office lead us and major intersections covered by the fire departments of Washington County. We would like to thank all the individuals that took time out of their busy lives to make ours a safer one.
The ride this year was approximately 53 miles in length and had 49 bikes in the ride and 69 riders. They donated a Teddy Bear or give a donation to go on the ride. People get free hamburgs, hot dogs and sodas at Hometown Honda and then also get a snack and sodas after the ride at Marietta Memorial Hospital. We also had a 50/50 drawing and auctioned off a few donated items to the riders.
The ride this year took in $500 cash and a whole bunch of Teddy Bears that will be auctioned off at a later date. This money will then be used to purchase hyper allergenic bears to be given to children that are brought into the hospital for treatment.
I would now like to recognize the following groups and individuals for all they done to make the event a success this year. Harry and Bobbi Irvine, Hometown Honda, Dunham Township Volunteer Fire Department, Barlow Township Volunteer Fire Department, Washington County Sheriff's Office, Marietta Police Department, Goldwing Road Riders Association Chapter A3, Marietta Ohio, Chapter F3, Lancaster, Ohio, Chapter X, Nelsonville, Ohio, Chapter J, Parkersburg., Christian Motorcycle Association and Scully's Signature Cycles.
Thank you all.
John and Dee Ayers
