Socials help VFDs that face many challenges these days

June 7, 2012
The Marietta Times

The spring and summer ice cream social season has officially kicked off in Washington County, with most of the events held by volunteer fire departments.

We urge residents to attend, and not only for the games, food and to catch up with neighbors.

For many departments, the social is the largest fundraiser of the year and is depended on to help keep the finances afloat. Without adequate funding, the departments can't afford new equipment, training and the things necessary in order to be there to help save life and property.

For those who can't attend and can't donate money, most area departments could also use the donation of time.

In recent years, the volunteer departments have found themselves with fewer members and are often short staffed on runs.

They're in need of community members who depend on the departments to also be a part of them and to keep them going from generation to generation.

Whatever you can give this season to your local community fire department, whether it's to sign up or the price of an ice cream cone, please do.
