ST. MARYS, W.Va. - A 2-year old boy was attacked and killed by two dogs Wednesday in St. Marys after walking into a neighbor's yard, police said.
West Virginia State Police and Pleasants County Sheriff's Office responded to the Oak Grove area around 1:10 p.m. Wednesday after an emergency call from the boy's father.
A 2-year-old boy walked into a neighbor's yard while playing and was attacked and killed by two mixed-breed dogs, according to a press release from the West Virginia State Police St. Marys Detachment. The boy's father found him in the yard behind the neighbor's residence, State Police said.
The boy had been mauled to death, and likely could not have survived the injuries sustained at the scene, police said.
The dogs were removed from the scene and are secured under quarantine at a veterinarian's clinic pending further legal proceedings.
Wood County Coroner Mike St. Clair said the body of the victim was sent to the state medical examiner in Charleston, W.Va., for an autopsy.
It is unknown whether any charges were filed and no names were released Wednesday.
The State Police continue to investigate the incident.
State Police in St. Marys did not return messages Wednesday night, but a dispatcher with the Parkersburg Detachment said additional information would likely not be released Wednesday night.
