VIENNA, W.Va. - Ohio Valley University's student body recently selected Dr. Maureen Modesitt as the 2012 Adjunct Instructor of the Year and Jason Dougherty as Staff Member of the Year.
This is the first year either award has been presented. The College of Education's Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) chapter members led the annual selection of the awards in conjunction with the Professor of the Year award.
Each spring, the ASCD offers the opportunity for all OVU students to vote through a ballot process and make comments on their chosen faculty member. The students vote for the professor they believe best engages the students in an effective learning environment. This year students were also able to select an adjunct instructor and staff member to honor.
"Dr. Modesitt is an energetic, enthusiastic, and positive director of theatre. She leads our students in several productions each year," said Jo Pennington, dean for the College of Education. "Her students are her colleagues and they collaborate and learn together. OVU students appreciate her professionalism, dedication to excellence, and her desire for them to build their dramatic and performance skills."
This year's Staff Member of the Year is Jason Dougherty, dean of students.
"Our students recognize Mr. Dougherty's quality and caring attitude toward them, fondly calling him 'J.D.'," said Pennington. "They know he has their best interests at heart. He listens to their problems and ideas and he helps them find solutions. They know that J.D. supports and mentors them in all parts of their lives and they can count on him."
Pennington noted, "Votes by students for the people who receive these honors mean that the students understand the importance of OVU's goals and they recognize the mentoring they are receiving from these employees."
