Isabel "Molly" Popwell, 97, of Marietta, formerly of New Bern, N.C., died on Friday (June 22, 2012) at Harmar Place in Marietta.
She was born in McHenry, Md., on Feb. 2, 1915, and was the daughter of the late Robert L. and Bertha Loudermilk Popwell. She was a 1932 graduate of the Oakland High School. She had been an industrial nurse for E.I. DuPont for many years and then for the Pipeline Construction throughout Canada. Upon her retirement, she and her husband moved to Americus, Ga., where they farmed over 2,000 acres of crops, some of which were peanuts that were sold to President Jimmy Carter. She was a member of the Garber United Methodist Church in New Bern. She love to travel, play golf and loved to boat, having lived on the river.
Survivors include her two grandsons, Harrell Gandy and Col. Walter Gandy; six grandchildren, Drew, Meghan, Ann, Noah, Alex and Michael Gandy; three god children, Tammie Duke, Bucky Popwell and Kathi Adams. Also surviving are her sister, Irene Moren of Indianapolis, Ind.; a brother, Robert L. (Betty) Hoye of Belpre; several nieces and nephews. A brother-in-law, Julius Popwell, and a sister-in-law, Betty Jean Sheffield, also survive her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Popwell; two sisters, Lucille Magro and Marie Forbes; and her stepdaughter, Rebecca Jones.
