BEVERLY - On a hot, humid day at Lakeside Golf Course, the Mid-Ohio Valley Junior Golf Association had an overall rough time on the links Wednesday.

Mostly due to the rough elements, none of the 37 MOVJGA golfers were able to finish under par.

"It's nasty out here," Zach McKenna said. "Days like this, you just have to go out and do the best you can."

Zach McKenna retrieves ball after a shot in the Mid-Ohio Valley junior Golf Association tournament at Lakeside Golf Course Wednesday. McKenna of Warren was a medalist.

McKenna, from Warren High, earned medalist recognition by shooting a 73, good for three over par. McKenna was able to bounce back from a poor start to claim the title.

"I started our pretty bad," McKenna said. "Then I turned it around with a couple birdies and got back on track."

It was McKenna's first MOVJGA win, and he said that previous experience on the course was beneficial to him.

"I actually golfed here last week with my dad," McKenna said. "It helped me to know what clubs to hit when."

Although he wasn't extremely pleased with his score, McKenna was happy with the overall result.

"I had a big shot on No. 8," McKenna said. "From about 10 yards out, I put it on and hit it for a birdie. I wish my score would have been lower, but I'm still happy to finish first."

Also in the 16-18 age group, Austin Root placed second with a score of 75. Mike Sams also shot a 75, but lost the tiebreaker to Root to finish third. Sam Petty shot a 76, while Brandyn Offenberger and Shon Smith each shot a 78. Also breaking 80 was Steve Farley and Mac McCormick, each shooting a 79.

Coleman Lamp was victorious in the 13-15 age group for the fourth time this year. Given the conditions, Lamp said his approach was pretty simple.

"I just tried to keep it in the middle of the fairway, get it on and two put," Lamp said.

Golfing at Lakeside for just the second time, Lamp said his success took a little good fortune.

"I had a lucky shot on No. 14 I think it was," Lamp said. "I hit it to one side of the green, and it bounced back to the other side for a birdie attempt. It was pretty lucky, but I guess it's better to be lucky than good."

Garrett Bertram finished just a stroke behind Lamp with a 77 to finish second. Alex Perry shot an 84 and Max Fitzgerald shot an 88, as only four of 15 from the age group broke 90.

In the 12 and under division, Carson Okraska shot a 40 on the front nine, goof for six over par. Caleb Scharff shot a 45 to finish second, and Heath Hill shot a 49 to place third. Hunter Hutchinson (50), Blake Snyder (55), and Evan Seevers (63) rounded out the scoring for the youngest group.

The next MOVJGA match is scheduled for Tuesday at South Hills with an 8:30 a.m. start.
