Robert L. "Bob" Schafer Jr., 82, died Saturday (July 21, 2012) at 4:50 p.m. He was born Oct. 3, 1929, in El Dorado, Arkansas, to the late Robert L. and Edna Stauch Schafer Sr.
Bob graduated from Marietta High School with the Class of 1947 and Marietta College in 1953. He belonged to Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity and he graduated from Officers Candidate School Newport, R.I. He was a Lt. J.G. in the U.S. Navy from 1953 to 1956. He was the fourth generation to own and operate Schafer Leather Store, from 1968 to 1994. Bob was a member of the Association of Ohio Longrifle Collectors and a lifetime member of the N.R.A. and former member of Marietta Gun Club.
In 1952, he married Marilyn Christy who survives with two children, daughter Christy DelMastro (Earl) of New Bern, N.C., and Rob Schafer (Barbara) of Marietta. A granddaughter Katheryn Schafer and a grandson Peter Schafer, both students at The Ohio State University, and one brother Jon A. Schafer (Jane) of Hillsborough, N.J. also survive.

Funeral services will be Tuesday (July 24, 2012) at 11 a.m. Hadley Funeral Home, 500 Fifth St., Marietta, with Roger A. Rush officiating and burial to follow in Mound Cemetery. Friends may call today (July 23, 2012) from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Fifth Street Hadley Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be to Marietta Community Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
