Many Warren Local schools will sell unwanted books, filmstrips and cassettes at Warren High School Aug. 5, 6 and 7. The proceeds will be used to finance reading promotion activities during the upcoming school year.

Before the year is out, residents can expect the Williamstown Bridge to be demolished. A replacement will be built after pier modification is complete.

Belpre received a federal grant for the maintenance of roads. The city declined the $60,000 grant when it was discovered that in order to receive the grant, the city must match $20,000.

50 years ago

Ron Dailey of West Virginia was injured in an accident at Hilltop Race Track.

The Harriet Follett Wing, the newest addition to Marietta Memorial Hospital, opened June 30. This new wing was to add bed space to the hospital. About 60 patients have been seen daily in the wing since its opening.

Five juveniles were cited into court for shoplifting, boat theft, breaking and entering and grand larceny.

75 years ago

A group of men purchased the "Country Castle," former home of the Northrups. It is the men's intention to turn the home into a night club.

The members of the Stanleyville Strivers 4-H Club will enjoy a wiener roast on July 30 near the home of Virginia Miller.

Marietta school administrators said it would take an estimated $13.3 million to run the schools during the 1987-88 school year.

The Becky Thatcher showboat will be having auditions for "Fall Frolics" in August. Rehearsals are slated to start Aug. 17. Performances will be Sept. 3 to Oct. 31.

Belpre residents can expect Civitan Park to be equipped with restrooms sometime next year.

75 years ago

Work began on the memorial in Muskingum Park with the pouring of the concrete foundations.

The war department approved $94.5 million for river work. Of that, $300 will be allotted for work on the Ohio River.

Washington School turned 25 years old.

100 years ago

The newest postmaster, Charles Ward, assumed his duties last weekend.
