Arrest follows Stockport bank robbery

An armed robbery at the First National Bank in Stockport Tuesday led to the arrest of a 23-year-old man.

The Morgan County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday afternoon it was not releasing the suspect's name until the investigation was complete and charges were filed.

According to a release from Morgan County Sheriff Thomas C. Jenkins, a call was received around noon Tuesday reporting the robbery at the bank, which is located at 1820 Broadway St. The man reportedly entered the bank, showed a weapon and demanded money. The weapon was not identified in the release. After being given an undetermined amount of cash by a teller, the man fled on foot, heading east toward the Muskingum River, the release says.

Washington County Sheriff Larry Mincks was contacted by Morgan County authorities and told the man might be heading toward Washington County in a black Ford vehicle. The suspect was described as a white adult male with blonde, shoulder-length hair, wearing a black knit cap, gray insulated shirt and black sweatpants with a white pinstripe.

But the suspect never left Stockport, according to Jenkins' release. Thanks to the description provided by bank employees and the assistance of several residents, the man was apprehended in the village at 12:31 p.m.

No information on where he was arrested was provided in the release.

The suspect provided information that led to the recovery of the weapon and clothing used in the incident, as well as "an amount of money," the release says.

The bank closed after the incident while deputies were investigating, said John Finley, security officer at First National Bank. He expected it to reopen normally today.

Finley said he could not provide information beyond what was released by the sheriff, except to say that "nobody was injured."
