The fireworks at the Parkersburg Homecoming were canceled after an explosion during the pyrotechnics injured four people.

A box found at the Marietta Municipal Court contained $128,000 worth of unpaid fines.

50 years ago

Washington County led the state in oil and gas drilling activity during the first half of the year. Of the 56 holes drilled, eight produced gas, 28 produced oil and 17 were dry.

Robert Secrest, a candidate for Congress, will speak at the Eagle's Club no. 458 on the 19th at 5:30 p.m.

75 years ago

Senator Verner E. Metcalf will share his legislative experiences with the Rotary Club Aug. 19 at noon.

Nineteen Williamstown residents took a day trip to Cleveland on the B. & O. Railroad. Many more are planning an excursion to Cincinnati next weekend.

100 years ago

Carl Mackey and James Dixon were chosen to represent Washington County at the Ohio State Fair.

The Star Theatre changed hands. New management is not expected to make any material changes and a new features are scheduled for Sept. 1.
