WILLIAMSTOWN - The driver of a tractor-trailer died early Monday after his truck crashed on Interstate 77 near the Williamstown exit, officials said.

Officials said the single-vehicle accident occurred around 6:59 a.m. when a tractor-trailer went over an embankment. The victim's name was not released Monday night.

Wood County Sheriff Jeff Sandy said the investigation is ongoing by the Wood County Crash Team. The team is comprised of the Parkersburg Police Department, Wood County Sheriff's Office and the Vienna Police Department.

"At this stage it is unknown if the individual had a medical condition or lost control of the tractor-trailer," said Sandy.

Sgt. Brett Pickens of the Wood County Sheriff's Office said the crash occurred at the 186 milepost northbound, just north of the Williamstown exit. The driver, a 49-year-old male, was hauling a three-axle milk tanker truck, officials said. The driver was pronounced dead at Camden Clark Medical Center.
