Off to the races: 10th annual Y5 Road Race held Sunday

August 27, 2012
By Ron Johnston - Sports Editor (rjohnston@mariettatimes.com) , The Marietta Times

Douglas Jones donned a yellow top for a reason.

The 47-year-old Hoosier, who was the first male finisher in Sunday's 10th annual Marietta Times Y5 Road Race at Muskingum Park, is a fan of famed cyclist Lance Armstrong.

"I'll admit that I haven't followed his situation closely," said Jones, whose winning time in the 5-kilometer run was 19 minutes, 18.63 seconds. "But I do know that the drug tests and everything he submitted, he's never been found guilty of the quote, unquote doping charges. So, yeah, I wear yellow in support of him."

SAM SHAWVER The Marietta Times
Douglas Jones of Crawfordsville, Ind., was the first male to cross the finish line at Sunday’s 10th annual Marietta Times Y5 Road Race at Muskingum Park in Marietta.

Armstrong was recently banned from cycling for life and stripped of seven Tour de France victories for allegedly using performance-enhancing drugs.

Jones, who hails from Crawfordsville, Ind., said he was in the Mid-Ohio Valley visiting his fiance Margery Frerich in Parkersburg.

"I come down here frequently," he said. "It's a 5-1/2 hour drive.

"I started running when I was 43, and had never won one before. Actually, my love and passion is the triathlon."

Brenda Anderson was the first female finisher in the Y5 event, crossing the line in 24:05.54. The 44-year-old Circleville resident, who was visiting her friend Angie Bullock in Beverly, said she almost didn't compete Sunday.

"I've had a hip problem," Anderson said, "and I wasn't sure I'd be able to run."

In the 5K walk race, Donna Graham (32.32.65) of Lowell and Richard Shea (30.51.05 of Marietta captured the female and male divisions, respectively.

Tim Finkel of Marietta was runner-up in the men's walk in 30:51.78, and, and Deana Farrah of Marietta was second in the ladies division in 32.51.32.

Neither Jones nor Anderson were challenged down the home stretch in the road run. Kevin Morey of Marietta was the men's runner-up in a clocking of 19:58.51, while 27-year-old Katie Vickers of Vienna, W.Va., was the second lady in 25:21.83

"My time was a little slow for me," Vickers said. "I'm probably just tired from school."

Numbers-wise, 78 runners competed in the Y5 5K run, and 47 walkers did the walk.

Joe Corra of Parkersburg's River City Runners and Walkers was once again race coordinator of the Y5. He was assisted by Tom Kramer, Julie Rathbone, and others.

"I'm just here to help out any way I can," Corra said.

The Marietta Family YMCA benefits from the Y5 event, which helps raise money to support the "Y" in its effort to scholarship children into programs.

The other race sponsors were Sports Med, J.D. Byrider, First Settlement Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine, Hampton Inn, Microtel Inn & Suites, First Settlement Physical Therapy, Amrine Awards & Apparel, All Pro Nutrition, Panera Bread, and Dr. Pepper/Snapple Group.
