Times past for Aug. 31

August 31, 2012
The Marietta Times

A railroad explosion at 4:30 a.m. in Lowell on Aug. 28 did $17,000 in damage and has left police seeking answers. The damage to the rails, ties and a retaining wall for a trestle has cut off several businesses that depend on the railroad.

The Marietta Times is asking local gardeners to save their vegetables and enter the Weird Vegetable Contest. The deadline for submitting the misshapen, mysterious-looking vegetables is Sept. 2 at 5 p.m.

The Family Laundering Company, located on Second Street, closed because of financial difficulties. It is not known whether or not the plant will resume operation.

The German Methodist Episcopal Church will host the conference of the district of the German Methodist Episcopal churches. Meetings will be held at noon each day, and visitors will be entertained in area homes.
