Ralph D. "Jake" Phelps, 77, of Marietta, died at home with his family by his side on Saturday (Sept. 8, 2012). He was born at Gravelbank, Ohio, on Sept. 13, 1934, to the late Dillen D. Phelps and Stella Dray. He was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Katherine Schade Phelps.
Jake graduated from Marietta High School, Class of 1953. He retired from the Airolite Company after 47 years of service and he then went to work for PCI Industries in Parkersburg, for a few years until his health failed. He was a welder by trade. He enjoyed garden tractor pulling, golfing, and being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Jake is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joan Schafer Phelps; daughters, Dianna (Gary) Seaman, Fleming, Ohio, and Debbie Malone, Reno, Ohio; and a son Ralph (Julie) Phelps Jr., Athens, Ohio. He is also survived by grandsons, Michael (Emily) Seaman, Barlow, Ohio, Doug (Jenny) Seaman, Barlow, Ohio, Lorren Miller (Shannon Slider), Whipple, Ohio, and Zack Phelps, Marietta; and great-grandchildren, Jordan and Austin Seaman, Olyvia, Anna, Dillon, and Jaiden Miller. There are two sisters, Jeanne (Comer) Fryman, Marietta, and Judy Stevens, Windham, Ohio; and a brother, Phil (Shirley) Phelps, Orwell, Ohio; as well as numerous nieces and nephews; and a special little sidekick, Nosey.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday (Sept. 12, 2012) at 1 p.m. at Hadley Funeral Home, Reno Chapel, 1021 Pike St., with the Rev. Ken Fullerton officiating. Burial to follow in Valley Cemetery. Family will receive friends from noon until 8 p.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 11, 2012) at the funeral home.
