25 years ago

The Marietta Area Chamber of Commerce board of directors gave the go-ahead for five levies. The levies will appear on the November ballot.

The Little Miss Barlow pageant will be held at the Barlow Fair tomorrow, Sept. 27.

100 years ago

William Batton, chief engineer at the Chancellor Hotel, was killed after his head was crushed in the elevator at the hotel. It is believed that he got out of the elevator and was caught between the car and the floor.

James F. Hovey resigned his post as editor and manager of the Matamoras Enterprise. The weekly paper will be run by Lewis Sharp of Marietta.
