Walter G. Lauer, 89, of Newport, Ohio, passed away Wednesday (Sept. 26, 2012) at his residence. He was born Feb. 28, 1923, at Cow Run, Washington County, Ohio, a son of the late Walter Daniel and Anna Marie Wentzel Lauer. He was a lifelong member of the Newport United Methodist Church, where he was very active. He was a graduate of Newport High School, a carpenter and a member of the Carpenter Local Union #899 of Parkersburg. He was a former member of the Lions Club and a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. His hobbies included gardening, woodworking, jack of all trades, he could fix anything and most of all he was a tinkerer.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Libby Dye; one son, Gale (Rhonda) Lauer of Newport, Ohio; one daughter, Linda (Gerry) Lockhart of Hockingport, Ohio; five grandchildren, Nick Lauer and Evan Lauer, both of Newport, Ohio, Stacey Boron of Marietta, Trina Haines of Vienna, W.Va., and Nathan Boron of Belmont, W.Va.; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Dye of Marietta; one brother, Calvin Lauer of St. Marys, W.Va.; one sister-in-law, Ann Lauer of Sardis, Ohio; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Homer Lauer, Harold Lauer, and Noble Lauer.
Services will be held Saturday (Sept. 29, 2012) at 11 a.m. at Ingram Funeral Home, St. Marys, W.Va., with Pastor Byron Bufkin officiating. Interment will be in the East Lawn Memorial Park, Reno, Ohio. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
