The hours for Marietta's new dog park in Jaycee Park on Jackson Hill will be from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. when the facility opens to the public, according to action by Marietta City Council Thursday.
"The dog park may be ready for use within the next two weeks, and we need to put hours, signage and regulations in place for the facility," said Councilman Harley Noland, D-at large, who chairs the lands, buildings and parks committee.
He said the legislation approved Thursday would set the hours of use and would be amended later to add regulations for use of the dog park.
The ordinance passed on a 6-1 vote, with Councilman Tom Vukovic, D-1st Ward, casting the dissenting vote due to a concern that there is not adequate lighting for the park to be open after daylight hours.
"I support the dog park, but am just concerned about the hours of operation," he said.
The pending opening of the dog park was announced earlier Thursday during a press conference at Jaycee Park, located just off Cisler Drive on Jackson Hill.

The project, to develop a two-acre facility where dog owners can exercise their pets, has been underway for a couple of years now, through an effort headed by organizer Teresa Hayes.
The dog park has been developed with local volunteers and materials donated by area businesses, as well as monetary donations from individuals and organizations
Noland said volunteers and donations are still needed to continue the remaining work and maintenance on the facilities.

In other business Thursday, council authorized the hiring of two temporary laborers in the streets department to assist crews during the fall leaf pickup program.
Also during Thursday's meeting, Mayor Joe Matthews noted several residents from the Harmar Street area had attended a neighborhood session of council's streets committee earlier in the day regarding the planned temporary closure of the street for major repairs by CSX Railroad.
"The last time this was done was in 1993," Matthews said. "Some people will be inconvenienced for a while (due to parking restrictions), but this will be a good paving project."
Beginning Oct. 11 CSX will repair rail lines and pave the company's 16-foot-wide right of way along Harmar Street. The first phase of the project will require no parking along Harmar Street between Lord and Prospect streets from Oct. 11 to 25.
During the second phase, beginning Oct. 25, no parking will be allowed on Harmar Street between Prospect and Lancaster streets.
