The annual drive to raise money to provide children with teddy bears when they are admitted to Marietta hospitals kicked off and will continue through Saturday, Oct. 10. The drive is sponsored by Marietta Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and Rax Restaurants. Many area businesses and fast food restaurants are running promotions all week for the drive.

The Delta Queen will stop here for the final time of 1987 tomorrow, Oct. 7. The sternwheeler will be docked from 8 a.m. to noon. Touring of the boat is left to the discretion of the master of the vessel.

A poetry reading is scheduled on board the Showboat Becky Thatcher on Sunday, Oct. 11. Wayne Dodd, professor of English at Ohio University, will be reading from his widely published poetry.

Belpre police are set to move into the new offices next to the city building. The total cost of the move and updated equipment totaled around $300,000.

100 years ago

The Cincinnati Reds will be in the city to play an exhibition game with the Marietta Professionals. Several thousand spectators are expected to attend.

The taxation on the railroads in Washington County has increased more than $300,000. In 1911, taxes amounted to $2,837,260. For 1912, taxes totaled $3,165,170, a difference of $327,910.
