By Ron Johnston - Sports Editor (rjohnston@mariettatimes.com) , The Marietta Times

Marietta High was Bishop-bit.

The Tigers turned the ball over six times, had a field goal blocked, and was penalized in key situations en route to a 10-0 setback to Zanesville Rosecrans in an East Central Ohio League football game at Don Drumm Stadium Friday night.

MHS, 1-7 overall and 0-3 in the ECOL, was blanked for the second consecutive week. The Tigers have now lost seven straight.

Rosecrans improved its record to 7-1 overall, 4-0 in the ECOL. The Bishops have won seven straight.

The only scoring in the game came on a first-quarter field goal by Johnny MacLean and one-yard touchdown run by Chase Lanning late in the fourth quarter.

MHS was its own worst enemy in the first quarter, turning the ball over three times, twice on fumbles and once on an interception.

After the opening kickoff, MHS coughed up the football on its first play from scrimmage. The Tiger defense was able to stiffen up, though, and forced the Bishops to attempt a 26-yard field goal, which was made by MacLean.

Marietta then went on the move and had the ball on Rosecrans' one-foot yard line when it fumbled it in the end zone where it was recovered by the Bishops for a touchback.

Later in the period, MHS quarterback John Henry had a pass intercepted.

In the second quarter, Marietta's Anthony Kimbrough picked off a throw and returned it to the Rosecrans 28. But the Tigers turned it over a fourth time when Henry had a second pass intercepted.

Later in the stanza, MHS turned the ball over on downs in Rosecrans territory.

At the half, the Tigers trailed 3-0.

In the third quarter, Marietta recovered a Bishops fumble but again was unable to capitalize on the turnover.

About midway through the period, Marietta's Brent Huck attempted a 33-yard field goal but it was blocked by Rosecrans.

MHS fumbled a fourth-quarter punt deep in its territory, and it was recovered by Rosecrans.

The Bishops moved the ball to the one-yard line where Lanning went in for the TD with 2:48 left on clock.

Later, Lanning picked off an Anthony Kimbrough throw to seal the deal.
