Susan D. Bailey died in Marietta after a long and courageous battle against cancer on Nov. 14, 2012. She was born May 5, 1937, in Barnesville, Ohio, the only child of Rolland Alva and Ruth Peddicord Bailey. While she was young, Susan and her mother often traveled by train to visit family in Maine. All her life, she looked forward to the time spent among her many cousins at the Bailey reunion every fall. Susan was a graduate of Barnesvelle High School and Baldwin-Wallace College. She retired from Dayton City Schools where she taught English. Earlier in her life Susan had resided in New York City where she taught in the Cathedral School of St. John the Divine and worked in merchandising at Bonwit-Teller.
Of Quaker extraction, Susan became a valued member of Chesterfield Monthly Meeting of Friends in Chesterhill, Ohio in 2004. She was actively involved in the work of many committees in Ohio Yearly Meeting. She was indeed a person who "let her life speak." She was also active in a spiritual fellowship dedicated to helping others and sponsored many.
Susan was an individual who kept learning all of her life, reading two or three books at a time. Possessing an inquiring mind, she was discerning and frank and usually provided a different perspective during any discussion. She will be missed by many of her former students, many cousins, and by those who have come to know her.
Susan is survived by her caregiver and companion, Joshua Gammon and faithful friend, Diane Pawlowski, her many cousins and friends.
Following cremation, her ashes will be placed in Stillwater Meeting cemetery in Barnesville, Ohio. A memorial service after the manner of Friends will be held in the Chesterfield Meeting House, Chesterhill, Ohio on Dec. 1, 2012 at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, her friends and family request that donations be made to a charity or foundation of the donors own choosing.
