Hollie (Hod) Edward Handschumacher passed away peacefully Sunday (Dec. 2, 2012) at Heartland in Marietta, surrounded by his loving family.
Hollie was born March 16, 1927, to Talmage and Edith Cline Handschumacher. He graduated from Bethel High School, Marr, Ohio. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army under General Patton in France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria and Italy from 1945 to 1947.
He was a member of the Masterson Lodge 429 F&AM , Eastern Star 584 the Highland Ridge Community Church, Lowell American Legion 750, an original member of Buckmasters, and the Marietta VFW.
He retired after 37 years from Elkem Metals and also worked at Marietta Concrete. He enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, golfing, camping, tug tractor pulling, and bowling.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Ruth Becker Handschumacher; two daughters, Cheryl (Wayne) McAlarney and Jane Schott; and one son, Jay (Debbie) Handschumacher. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Douglas (Jessica) Schott, Kyle (Jessica) McAlarney, Curtis (Sara Stephens) Schott, Kaitlyn (Matt) Weekley, and Lynsey Schweitzer; and three precious great-granddaughters, Olivia Stout, Makayla McAlarney, and Chloe Schweitzer. Also surviving are three brothers, Don (Carolyn) of New Matamoras, Gerald (Betty) of Belpre and Howard (Cheryl) of Belpre; and two sisters, June Williams of Woodsfield and Peggy (Andrew) Brooker of Churchtown; sister-in-laws, Lucy Handschumacher of Canton, Mildred Handschumacher of Warner, and Dorothy Smith of Gallipolis; and brother-in-law, Dean (Carolyn) Becker of Whipple; along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; mother and father-in-law, Gilbert and Nora Becker; son, Daryl Handschumacher; son-in-law, David Schott; brothers, Jim, Harry, Charles, Dwight, Harold, Jackie; sisters, Ella Stewart, Mary Lou Jones, Gertrude Gerken; and many brothers- and sisters-in-law.
Services will be held at Hadley Funeral Home Reno Chapel, 1021 Pike St., Wednesday (Dec. 5, 2012) at 11 a.m., with burial in Salem Township Cemetery. Calling hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday (Dec. 4, 2012), where Masonic and Eastern Star services will be at 7:30 p.m.
