- Washington County Sheriff Richard Ellis asked Washington County commissioners for a $600,000 increase to the budget. Ellis said the increase would cover basic necessities, not luxuries.
- Dec. 17 will mark the day for the eighth annual Christmas Outdoor Lighting Contest, which is sponsored by the Marietta Rotary Club. The contest is open to residents in Marietta, Devola, Oak Grove and Reno.

- Ben Moats, 8, of Parkersburg, accidentally shot and killed his older sister, Eleanor, 12. The boy found a revolver and was playing with it when it accidentally discharged, hitting Eleanor in the head.
- Wallace and Clarence Ritchey, who were caught by local police with 10 stolen chickens in their wagon, pleaded guilty to indictments for petit larceny.
