Marietta got off to a very slow start, and nearly got blanked in the opening period as Frontier staked itself to an 8-1 lead.

Riley had the Tigers' lone point, a freebie at the 2:50 mark.

"It was scary there for a little bit," said MHS head coach J.D. Secrest, whose Tigers were coming off a 59-21 setback to Zanesville last Friday night.

"I think we came out and pressed, and Frontier did a good job of knocking down shots."

The Cougars struggled also but got four points from Drew Schneider, and two apiece from Coley Farley and Taylor Merckle.

"In all three of our games this season, we've had the lead at the end of the first quarter," said Frontier boss Roger Kirkpatrick.

"We needed to control the tempo, and I thought we did a good job of that in the first quarter against Marietta."

As cold as Marietta was in the first stanza, the Tigers were red-hot in the second period, starting off with a 15-0 run.

Getting things going, McKnight drained a three, and Riley followed with a drive and score.

After McKnight got a steal and layup to tie the game at 8-all, he then buried a three to give the orange and black its first lead of the contest, 11-8.

Jordan Satterfield's jumper, and Riley's three-point play stretched the Tiger advantage to 16-8.

Frontier then got its first bucket of the quarter on a Merckle layup.

Then, Hill, who'd previously scored 14 points to lead the Marietta JV team to a 50-35 win over Frontier, entered the game and hit two consecutive threes and a deuce to make it 24-10.

At halftime, MHS owned a 24-12 lead.

"Our younger kids came off the bench in the second quarter and really gave us a spark, and knocked in some shots," Secrest explained.

"We know Corey (Hill) is a shooter, and Frontier was in that zone. I knew I had him for two (varsity) quarters, and he responded."

After the break, the rout resumed as Marietta outpointed Frontier 18-4 in the third quarter for a 42-16 lead.

During the stanza, Cameron Benson hit two threes, and Satterfield got one.

"I had a feeling that once we got over the hump, our pressure (defense) would get to Frontier," Secrest said.

Frontier, which outpointed MHS 17-13 in the final period, finished with 26 turnovers in the contest.

"We had a hard time shooting in the game," Kirkpatrick said.

"We've got some things to figure out, but we will get better."

Frontier is scheduled to host Beallsville at 7:30 p.m. Friday, while Marietta entertains Dover in an East Central Ohio League game at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

"I like playing at home," Secrest said.
