Winter just began Friday and already the Marietta area has seen snow, wind and freezing rain.
It's an early winter reminder to be prepared.
The region experienced widespread and longterm power outages due to summer storms this year and ice and snow can cause the same issues in this season.
Every household should have an emergency kit.
FEMA recommends the following:
Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation.
Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food.
Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both.
Flashlight and extra batteries.
First aid kit.
Manual can opener for food.
Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger.
Also, try to make sure you have a full tank-or close to it-of gas in your car when bad weather is expected and keep blankets inside the vehicle in case you become stranded during severe weather.
A small generator is a good idea if it's in your price range. It could mean the difference between a house with heat and one without.
