Merle Otto Hearn

Merle Otto Hearn, 84, of Leesburg, Fla., (formerly of Newport) died Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, in The Uniontown Hospital, Uniontown, Pa.

Born Sept. 13, 1928, in Lowell, Ohio, he was the son of the late Raymond Otto and Edith Alma Cline Hearn.

A veteran of the Korean War, Merle served in the U.S. Army for 27 years, then worked as a mail clerk at the Marietta Post Office for several years.

Upon his retirement, Merle remained active, traveling around the United States with the Coachmen Caravan Club. An avid shuffleboard player, he split his residency between Florida and Hendersonville, N.C., and held memberships in shuffleboard leagues in both locations.

He was a member of Berean Baptist Church in Okahumpka, Fla., and attended the Open Door Fellowship while in Hendersonville.

Merle was staying with his son, Douglas Stewart (Debbie) Hearn of Hopwood, Pa., until he fell seriously ill and became a resident of Mt. Macrina Manor, a skilled nursing facility, in Uniontown, Pa.

On Aug. 9, 1948, he married Evelyn J. Velanis in Anchorage, Alaska, who preceded him in death on Sept. 4, 2006.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and David Hearn, and an infant sister, Mary Lou Hearn.

Surviving, in addition to his son and daughter-in-law, are his brother, Lloyd (Bettylou) Hearn of Jenison, Mich.; a sister, Mrs. Sidney (Linda) Blessing of Temperance, Mich.; stepgrandson Joe (Amy) Foster of Ohiopyle, Pa.; step-great-grandchildren, Hannah and Patrick Foster; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Interment will be private in Newport Cemetery. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
