WILLIAMSTOWN - Kathleen Cornell tallied 10 points of her 12 points in the fourth quarter as host Williamstown outscored Ravenswood 17-13 to notch a 71-67 LKC North girls basketball win Wednesday night.
The teams entered the last period tied at 54 after Taylor Youell led a late third-quarter charge with seven points for the visiting Red Devilettes in the final 45 seconds, capping the comeback by knotting the count with a buzzer-beating trey.
But the Yellowjackets, now 3-4, quickly untied the contest at 56-54 on a Cornell hoop with 7:07 to play for a lead they never relinquished the rest of the way,
A pair of Cornell treys and sandwiched around a regular basket by her gave Williamstown a seven-point bulge, 68-61, with just 2:15 remaining and a Brooke Cieslewski bucket upped the lead to 70-61 at the 1:38 mark.
However, a 6-0 run by Ravenswood, now 5-4, in a span of 36 seconds closed the gap down to three at 70-67, culminated by two fast-break baskets by Youell, the second with 42.6 seconds left.
After the 'Jackets lost the ball out of bounds with 32.8 seconds to play, Ravenswood's Melonna Carmichael missed a trey try at 11.2 and the Devilettes also missed a rebound-bucket attempt with Williamstown then gaining possession and Cieslewski being fouled at 5.6 seconds.
