25 years ago

- Area post offices will be cutting back on operation hours in order to help the U.S. Postal Service slice $1.2 million from the federal budget for the next two years.

- Elkem Metals Co. is hiring 25 to 30 new employees to work at its plant on Ohio 7, between Marietta and Belpre.

100 years ago

- D.R. Brothers & Co. added a large wallpaper department to the second floor of its store. The rug selection has also been expanded.

- The Marietta area schools are considered to be one of the best in the state. Evidence is shown by the fact that not one boy who entered into The Ohio State University last fall was dismissed for not making the average grade.
