Larry Gene Sorrell

Larry Gene Sorrell, of McConnelsville, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday (March 6, 2013) at 8:50 a.m. following a brief hospitalization.

He was 79 years young, born Aug. 22, 1933, to Hershel and Ethel Anderson Sorrell. Larry graduated from Glouster High School in 1951. He earned a bachelor's of education, master's in school administration and completed one year of his doctorate degree, all from Ohio University. Larry began his teaching career in 1958 at Morgan Meigs Grade School as a fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade teacher. During his career, Larry taught fifth and sixth grade and coached seventh- and eighth-grade boys basketball at Reinersville Grade School. He was the principal at Malta Grade School, served as principal of M&M Elementary for 15 years and the trade school supervisor for Morgan High School for 13 years. He loved and supported his teachers and students. Larry participated in many school administrator professional organizations. Larry retired from the Morgan Local School System in 1991.

Larry was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a member of the M&M Kiwanis and active in the Outdoor Extravaganza. He was a member of the M&M Jaycees and the Morgan Athletic Boosters. Larry was an avid golfer participating in the Morgan County Mixed Golf League and the Lakeside Retired Golf League. He belonged to the Trimble Masonic Lodge #0557 serving as a past master of the Bishopville Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction U.S.A. and the Aladdin Shriners of Columbus. He was a member of the Morgan Shrine Club and participated in the first Morgan Shrine Club Motor Patrol.

Larry is survived by his wife of 55 years, Judith Staker Sorrell; two daughters, Becky Sorrell Mitchell (Matt) of Scottsdale, Arizona, Jennifer Sorrell Bentley (Brett) of Powell, Ohio; two granddaughters, Madison and Devon Bentley; and two brothers, Max McGee (Norma) of Chillicothe, Ohio, and Foster McGee of Toledo, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Earl McGee.

Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday (March 9, 2013) at Miller-Huck Funeral Home, 62 South 7th Street, McConnelsville, Ohio. The funeral is at 2 p.m. on Sunday (March 10, 2013) at the funeral home with Pastor Walter Jones officiating with graveside services following at the McConnelsville Cemetery.

Following the graveside service, family and friends are invited to celebrate his life and enjoy food at Trinity United Methodist Church. Masonic services will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
