Dempsey Orville Phillips, 76, of Marietta, passed away Thursday (May 30, 2013) at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
He was born Jan. 29, 1937, in Barnesville, to David Levi and Mary Jane Bunting Phillips. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Dempsey worked for B. F. Goodrich/RJF, retiring following 34 years of employment. He was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church, and was honored in 2001 by the Knights of Columbus as Volunteer of the Year. He was a 4th. Degree Knights of Columbus, member of BPO Elks #477, Loyal Order of Moose #1823, American Legion Post #750 in Lowell and Cambridge VFW Post 2901.
He was a competitive euchre player and enjoyed golfing. He was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan and treasured time spent with his grandsons.
Dempsey is survived by his wife, Charlotte A. Hannahs Phillips, daughter, Robin Mollica (Kenny) of Columbus, son, Troy D. Phillips (Jan) of Williamstown, grandsons, Ryder Mollica and Harley Phillips, two sisters, Sarah Madaline Shivers of Cambridge and Helen Schlosser (John) of Byesville and twin brother, David Phillips, of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Ed, Ralph, Hubert, Jim and Kenneth and sisters, Geneva Shivers, Nellie Shepherd and Mildred Phillips.
Funeral Liturgy, with Mass, will be at 10 a.m. on Monday (June 3, 2013) at St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. John Michael Campbell as celebrant. Friends may call at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. There will be a vigil service at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Park with full military honors.
