The Washington County Sheriff's Department has sent a 12-gauge shotgun to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation in London to be examined in connection with the May 24 murder of Joseph B. Wright, 44, of Whipple.
The Washington County grand jury indicted Ohio Department of Transportation radio supervisor David E. Soummers on charges of wiretapping. Soummers was indicted on 11 counts of wiretapping, eight of which accuse Soummers of wiretapping the Marietta District 10 office telephone of Pauline Mincks, an ODOT administrative aide.

The Ohio River has been closed to towboat and barge traffic because of the unusually early summer drought. The Army Corps of Engineers expects the river to be closed for several days.
Eve Inc. and the Washington and Noble counties domestic violence program will have their third annual "Betty Cleland Memorial Walk" at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 18 at the Washington County Fairgrounds. Runners are also welcome to participate in the 10-mile route.

Marietta residents have been waiting for some sign that authorities are going to start enforcing the city's speed regulations. Despite Mayor Leeper's repeated orders to the police department to enforce regulations, nothing has been done.
Tom Archer is serving out a fine of $5 and costs for a drunk and disorderly charge. Archer was without money, but was told he could put his mother's gold watch up for security. Archer, while anxious to be out of jail, refused to put up his mother's watch and went back to jail.
