John A. Smearman, 63, of Lincoln, N.H., formerly of Williamstown, died peacefully at his home March 2, 2013. Born Dec. 25, 1949, the son of Clarence (Cy) and Margaret (Federica) Smearman.
John was a 1968 graduate of Williamstown High School and enjoyed participating in sports. In football he was a member of the 3rd team All State and won numerous trophies and awards in track and wrestling. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Wood County from 1968 to 1972. During his European tour of duty it gave him the opportunity to visit his mother's native land of Italy. Memories of the Vatican, Sistine Chapel and other sites of Rome were held dear to his heart. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he began his civilian career at Norfolk Naval Shipyard and then at Pease Air Force Base in Portsmouth, N.H. Retiring to Lincoln, N.H. 20 years ago, he enjoyed all that the area had to offer including hiking, fishing and the Mount Washington area. There he was known by the name "Two Feather" for always wearing two feathers in his hat.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Donnie Ray Smearman. He is survived by his twin sister, Janet Ball and her husband, Sam of Slidell, La.; brother, Brad Smearman and his wife, Beverly of Columbus, Ohio; and a sister-in law, Linda Mather Smearman of Vero Beach, Fla. In addition, his nephews, Kenneth Ball (USN), San Diego, Calif., and Michael Ball of Slidell, La.; and nieces, Amber Smearman Murray of Bowie, Md., and Kerri Smearman of Marietta. Also surviving are his great-nephews, Braden, Maverick, Sammy and Caid, who John was very proud of.
A private family memorial Mass will be held at St Mary Catholic Church in Marietta.
