BEVERLY - The Fort Frye golf team will begin a brand new season with a brand new head coach today at 8 a.m. The Cadets will compete in the Washington County Championship at Oxbow Golf Course with first-year head coach Bruce Lanning at the helm. Lanning, a former head football coach at Morgan High School, replaces Aaron Nesselroad, who was the Cadet front-man for just one season.
Gone from the 2012 team is first team all-district performer Shon Smith, who consistently earned medalist honors at many Cadet matches last season. However, there is plenty of returning talent for The Fort.
Maggie Huck returns for her senior season. Like Smith, Huck earned first team all-district honors last season and should be one of Fort Frye's top performers this fall.
Senior Brennan Schilling was an all-district honorable mention pick in 2012 and is another one to keep an eye on this season. Lanning, along with the other Fort Frye fall sports coaches, addressed a large crowd at "Meet the Team" night at Fort Frye High School Thursday evening to introduce his team to the community. Lanning pointed out that when he was considering accepting the coaching position for the golf team, it was the quality of the kids that swayed him.
"When this job was proposed to me, I said 'Well, what kind of kids are there?'" he said. "Once I found out, I knew I was going to take it."
On the girls side, Fort Frye will also be represented by juniors Meg Schott and Mallory Wagner, while the boys will have senior Brad Martin, junior Devin Brooker, sophomore Gabe Duskey and freshman Kyle Massey. "They've been working hard," Lanning said. "We're excited."
Fort Frye will host its home matches at Lakeside Golf Course in Beverly again this season. Also expected to participate in today's golf championship is Marietta, Warren, Waterford and Belpre.
