Ohio legislators and election officials were leery for several years of suggestions they allow people to register to vote online. The concern, centered on the possibility of vote fraud, was understandable.
But as Secretary of State Jon Husted - who has displayed a sharp focus on honest elections - points out, effective safeguards against misuse of online voter registration systems are available. Husted has been among those urging the General Assembly to allow the practice.
A bill has been introduced in the state Senate to allow Ohioans to register to vote and request absentee ballots online. In addition, the measure would allow Husted to work with other states to ensure voter rolls are accurate.
Lawmakers should approve the change and Gov. John Kasich should sign the bill into law.
