Mary Ellen McCormick Matthews, 95, of Marietta, passed away Wednesday (Aug. 14, 2013) at Harmar Place in Marietta. She was born Thursday, May 30, 1918, in Marietta to the late Edward and Mabel (Fitzgerald) Mc-Cormick.
Mary Ellen was a lifetime resident of Marietta, a longtime member of the First Congregational Church, and worked as an assistant to Dr. Kenneth Bennett until his retirement.
Mary Ellen is survived by three nieces, Barbara Anne Bruner (John Nield) of Cincinnati, Ohio, Nancy Alicia Emmert (Robert) of Midland, Mich., Maura Ellen Seger (Michael) of Stanford, Conn.; three stepchildren, Cheryl DeMara (Frank) of Owego, N.Y., Charlene Waldo (Rick) of Columbus, Ohio, William Matthews (Diana) of Tulsa, Okla., as well as many grandnieces and grandnephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Francis "Rango" Matthews, whom she had married on March 8, 1980, in Marietta; brother, Tryon McCormick; sisters, Jeannette (Bernard) Joy and Anne (Michael) Jones.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, at the First Congregational Church, 318 Front St., Marietta 45750 with the Rev. Linda Steelman officiating. Burial will follow in Valley Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
In keeping with family tradition (Flowers for the Living), the family requests, in lieu of flowers, for Mary Ellen to be remembered in your thoughts and prayers, and that some time you give a flower to someone to brighten their day, as many had done so for her.
