Karl W. Krause, 97, of Nashville, Tenn., passed away Monday (Aug. 26, 2013).
Karl was born in 1915 in Storm Lake, Iowa, before the family moved to Marietta in 1917. He was one of four children of Marietta College Erwin Professor of Chemistry Ellis L. While at Marietta, Karl and C. William O'Neill, also MC '38 and former governor of Ohio were varsity coxswains of the Marietta crew. Races were held at Rollin College in Florida, Madison Wisconsin and Head of the Charles in Boston. Although he graduated at the height of the great depression, he was employed by the Sears Roebuck store on Second Street in Marietta, in the auto service department. Within a year he was the assistant manager. For nearly a decade, Karl was the head usher of the First Congregational Church in Marietta, and was a member of the search committee in 1940 (circa) for the selection of The Rev. Mr. Virgil Meyers as pastor.
Karl was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942 and became an officer in communications in the U.S. Army Air Force. He participated in the landings during the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, and Anzio; for the latter he was awarded the Bronze Star. He was stationed in Florence when Germany surrendered in 1945. He rose to the rank of major before discharge from the Army Air Force in 1945. After the war he rejoined Sears as the assistant manager of the Jamestown, N.Y., store. After two years in Jamestown he was transferred to Sears's headquarters in Chicago, Ill. as an executive in the kitchen appliance division, eventually reaching the upper echelons of that division. He and his wife Dorothy retired in 1980 and moved to Sarasota, Fla., although he maintained a summer home in Wisconsin near the family farm.
Karl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; a son, Karl Jr.; his brother Orville (MC '38); and his sister, Mary Krause Hobba (MC '46).
He is survived by his brother, Richard (MC '47) of Washington, D.C.; his son, Kent, an attorney in Nashville, Tenn. (and Alease Robertson) and three grandchildren, Michael, who is a MD-PhD student in a joint program with the National Institutes of Health and Case Western Reserve University, Jocelyn, who is employed with SAG-AFTRA in Los Angeles, Kimberly of Nashville; and nieces, nephews, and cousins. His niece, Virginia (Hobba) O'Connor (MC '73), resides in Marietta with her family, and a nephew, Irvin E. Hobba (formerly of Marietta), resides in Atlanta, both are children of Mary Hobba.
A private family service will be held sometime this fall, and Karl's ashes will be interred in the family plot in Mound Cemetery in Marietta.
