ODOT re-opens Ohio 7 lane near Newport
The Ohio Department of Transportation has reopened the southbound lane of Ohio 7 just north of Newport. The lane had been closed since Aug. 22 following a rock slide.
Neighbors from the Ohio River on levee
Friends of the Lower Muskingum River will sponsor the fourth annual "Meet Your Neighbors" event at the Ohio River levee near the foot of Second Street at 5:30 p.m. Monday. Kelly Capuzzi from the Ohio EPA, and fellow EPA and ODNR personnel will have live fish they have collected by electroshocking from the Ohio River for people to see up close. Those in attendance will be able to ask questions about their identifications, life histories and preferred habitat. The event is free.
Pajama party Sept. 21 at Marietta library
The Marietta location of the Washington County Public Library will hold a pajama party for children ages 3 to 6 at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 21. Activities will include reading stories, making a craft and having a snack. To register, Youth Services Department or call 373-1057, Ext. 219.
Beginners chess class in Belpre
A beginners chess class is being held in the Belpre Library meeting room from 5 to 7 p.m. each Monday. The cost is $25 per month. Sessions include an introduction to the game, including basic checkmating patterns, tactics, end games and openings.

workshops at library
The Marietta location of the Washington County Public Library, 615 Fifth St., will offer two free resume workshops. The first workshop is from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, and the second workshop is from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 18. Registration is required by calling 373-1057, Ext. 208.
Free flu shots for veterans Saturday
The Marietta City Health Department and the Veterans Administration (V.A.) will be giving flu shots at the Marietta Armory, 214 Front St., between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday. The V.A. will be giving free flu shots to all veterans. The Marietta City Health Department will be available to give flu shots to the veterans' spouses, family and friends 18 years and older. There is a $25 charge and many insurance companies will be accepted.
