Marietta City Council approved a new zoning classification for department stores and light manufacturing plants. This will allow for the former Rink's discount store location to become an industrial development site. The 90,000 square foot building has housed weekend flea markets since the store closed in May 1987.

Washington County's oldest resident, Mrs. Mary Columbia Lasure, died yesterday at the age of 103 at her home in Barlow. An artist of considerable talent, Mrs. Lasure was born Aug. 10, 1860, to Daniel and Kathryn McVicar Turner. She married James W. Lasure on Sept. 22, 1887.

Several teachers for the high school were named at Marietta's Board of Education meeting, including George C. Donson, at a salary of $1,000; Nellie F. Henderson, Martha Ward, C. Esther Bridge, and Beatrice Heller, at salaries of $600 each; and Flora Benedict, at a salary of $400.
