As another sign of the seasons, it is time for 2013-14 Marietta-and-Vicinity Winter Feeder Bird Watch sponsored by the Marietta Natural History Society.
Thanks to you who have participated during previous counts. The more watchers who participate, the more complete the information about the number and species of birds that winter in different parts of the mid-Ohio Valley, variety of foods eaten and the time of year they appeared. This provides valuable information with which to compare past and future data.
After hosting a variety of birds all week, it sometimes seems as though they all take a vacation during the watch-weekend. However, this is a small frustration to trade for the joy of watching the birds in our yards and recording numbers and species on alternate weekends beginning Nov. 2-3 and continuing into March. This is a fine family activity as well.
Directions and tally sheets will be sent to you. Knowing you will miss a few weekends should not deter you from participating because the information you provide for the other weekends will still be helpful.
If you wish to participate or have questions about the project, please call me at 373-3372 or Bird Watchers' Digest, 373-5285, so we can get a tally sheet to you. The first weekend is Nov. 2-3, so act now!
