Marietta High and Warren High could be on a collision course in the Lucasville district II boys' soccer tournament.
If the two-time defending district champion Warriors (14-2-2) defeat Chillicothe Unioto at Valley High at 5 p.m. today, and the Tigers beat Lancaster Fairfield Union in the following match at approximately 7 p.m., the two Washington County schools will meet in the final Saturday at 4 p.m.
The operative word here, of course, is "if."
During regular-season play, Andrew Johnson-coached Warren downed Todd Morris-led MHS, 2-1 at the Devola Soccer Complex, and then tied the Tigers 1-1 in Vincent.
Last year, the Warriors eliminated Marietta 2-1 in overtime in a sectional championship tilt in Vincent.
Warren advanced to district competition with a 6-1 triumph over visiting Waverly in a sectional final last Saturday. Alex Miller and Aaron Mazurkiewicz paced the royal blue and white winners with two goals apiece. Kendrick Hendrix and Nathan Robinson each chipped in with one score. Mazurkiewicz also had two assists.
Warren keeper Tyler Schewendeman was credited with two saves in the match.
Also last Saturday, Marietta defeated Jackson 5-2 in a sectional tilt at the DSC.
Max Suckel led the orange and black booters with four goals, and tri-captain Brent Huck added a penalty kick.
MHS keeper Eric Pierce had eight saves.
In other sectional final matches, Unioto defeated Greenfield McClain 7-3, while Fairfield Union downed Circleville 5-2.
