Alton E. Phelps, 100, of Springfield, Ohio, formerly of Marietta, died Monday, (Oct. 28, 2013) at the Masonic Home in Springfield. He was born May 19, 1913, at Constitution, Ohio, son of James S. and Maggie Wilson Phelps.
He lived most of his life in the Marietta area and had worked for the A&P Grocery Company for many years. He later owned the Phelps Insurance Agency which he ran for many years. He graduated from Marietta High School and was a member of the State and Local Civitan International Club. He was one of the original organizers of what is now the Ewing School and WASCO. He had been a member of the American Union Masonic Lodge # 1 F&AM for over 50 years. He was a member of the Gilman Ave. United Methodist Church.
He was married June 25, 1939, to Helen M. Wright Phelps who died Jan. 15, 1993. He is survived by a daughter, Beverly Sarapin and husband Douglas of Glen, New Hampshire; two grandsons, Brian Sarapin and wife Andrea of Muscle Shoales, Ala., and Dan Sarapin and wife Christine of Mattatoisett, Mass.; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Annabelle Weekley of Florida. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; two brothers, Dillen Phelps and Frederick Phelps; two sisters, Mary Martha Gray and Ruth Alice Bintz.
