Several Marietta residents are joining together in making a $5,500 donation to the EVE shelter for battered women and children. The center had applied to Marietta City Council for a share of the community development appropriation, but was rejected.

Allen Rupp, Superintendent of Marietta City Schools, has announced that the area is facing a critical teacher shortage. Marietta schools have recently lost several instructors due to family "additions" and husbands being transferred.
100 years ago
Capt. Reynolds of the steamer Rainbow awoke to discover that the house across the street in Newport was on fire. The old Cree property, for many years used as a hotel, but currently owned by Luther Francis, was totally destroyed by the blaze.
