John R. "Jack" Pettit, 76 of Palmer Township, died unexpectedly at his home on Sunday (Dec. 29, 2013). He was born April 22, 1937, in Marietta, son of Ralph J. and Mary J. Kenney Pettit.
He was a retired Iron Worker and longtime farmer. He enjoyed farming and raising beef cattle and was known to all as "The Hay Man" and he has delivered his last load. He graduated from Waterford High School in 1955. He was a longtime member of the Iron Workers Union.
He is survived by four sisters, Karen Hoge of Cutler, Mary Grubert of Marietta, Janine Klenik of Smyrna, Del., and Nancy Habel and husband Phil of Marietta; sister-in-law, Lora Pettit of Athens; nieces and nephews, Tim and Katrina Grubert, James (Bridget) Pettit, Doug (Corrine) Pettit, Ryan (Melissa) Klenik, Rachael Klenik, Amanda and Megan Habel; great-nieces and nephews, Nathan and Derek Hoge, Max and Ethan Pettit, Leah and Mason Pettit and Ollie Klenik. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenny Pettit; and a nephew, Scott Hoge.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at McCurdy Funeral Home in Beverly, Ohio, with Mike White officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.mccurdyfh.com.
