In its organizational meeting to start off the new year, the Marietta Board of Education appointed a new president from its body Monday morning, with all else remaining relatively unchanged for 2014.
Bill Hutchinson, now entering his fourth year on the school board, was nominated for president by Vice President Wendy Myers. All five members voted in favor of Hutchinson, who will now take the place of Greg Gault, who has served as the board's president for the past four years.
The board also re-appointed Vice President Wendy Myers to her position.
"I don't plan on making any big changes yet for the new year," Hutchinson said.
Hutchinson is the business manager of the Parkersburg-Marietta Building and Construction Trades Council.
"I'm honored for this privilege to serve as president," he said. "Greg has done a great job as president...and I hope I can as well."
Marietta Board of Education
Newly-appointed president: Bill Hutchinson.
Re-appointed vice president: Wendy Myers.
Members: Don Atkins, Karen Burton, Greg Gault.
Gault, who has served as a board member for six years, decided it was time for a break from the position.
"After the resignation of the current president at the time, I happened to be the most senior person on the board and that's how I came into the position," he said. "I've learned a lot, but I just thought now it's time to let someone else do it."
Hutchinson also accepted the new position as Student Achievement Liaison after being asked by the board. He will meet and share with other liaisons across the state and report to the Ohio State Board of Education on Marietta's own success programs for student achievement as well as discussing new ways to improve academic performance.
Gault said for now he is not looking forward to any drastic changes, but just would like to see things continue to improve. He noted the board's goals to improve information technology within the schools is still a big priority.
"I think Bill will be an excellent president and do a great job," he said.
