The Washington County Sheriff's Office is investigating the Thursday death of a 6-year-old boy from Newport.
No foul play is suspected in the death of Tyler Ward, of 39011 State Route 7, said Washington County Sheriff Larry Mincks.
Ward was in the care of a grandparent, who phoned for an ambulance shortly before 9:30 a.m. Thursday. It was unclear what condition Ward was in when the call was placed, said Mincks.
A dispatch call sent out at that time indicated the boy was not breathing.
The boy had recently been sick, said Mincks.
The sheriff's office initially indicated the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning based on the suggestion of a first responder. While the gas has not been ruled out, Mincks said it is no longer the suspected cause of death.
"We're conducting interviews. There is forensic evidence being collected. I think the investigation will rely a lot on the coroner's report," he said.
Ward's body will be sent to the Montgomery County Coroner's Office for an autopsy and toxicology report, said Mincks.
