Thomas John Hancock, M.D., 95, of Washington Court House, passed away peacefully at his home Friday (Jan. 31, 2014) at 6 p.m.
Dr. Hancock was born Nov. 8, 1918, in Marietta, to Winfield Scott and Ethelyn Simpson Hancock.
He was a 1936 graduate of Marietta High School and a 1940 graduate of Amherst College, where he was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity. He received his medical doctor degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1943.
Dr. Hancock served in the medical corps of the U. S. Army in the European Theatre of Operation during World War II.
Following a five year residency, his time in World War II and one year of practice in Marietta, he opened his surgical practice in Washington Court House on Jan. 1, 1953. He retired in 1985.
He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery. He had been a member of the American, Ohio and Fayette County Medical Associations and was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honorary Society.
He was a member of the Fayette Bible Church where he and his wife were the last founding members; was a member of Paul H. Hughey Post #25 of the American Legion and he owned and showed American Saddlebred horses and was an avid farrier (blacksmith).
Dr. Hancock was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances Stitt and Jane Wilson.
He is survived by his wife, the former Joan Elizabeth Burns, whom he married Oct. 25, 1947; several nieces and nephews; and his church family.
The funeral will be Thursday (Feb. 6, 2014) at 7 p.m. at the Fayette Bible Church with the Rev. Tony Garren, pastor at the church, officiating. A graveside service will be held Friday (Feb. 7, 2014) at 2 p.m. in Oak Grove Cemetery in Marietta.
Friends may call at the Fayette Bible Church Thursday from 2 p.m. until the time of the service.
