Robert Eugene Thomas, 82, of Newport, passed away Wednesday (Feb. 5, 2014) at O'Bleness Hospital in Athens. Robert was born Tuesday, March 17, 1931, in Newport, to the late George and Mazie Stewart Thomas.
Robert served in the U.S. Air Force from 1949 to 1969, where he reached the rank of chief master sergeant. He served in the Vietnam War, and received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. After his retirement from the Air Force, he returned to Newport to live on the family farm and work for the Federal Aviation Administration until his retirement in 1995. Robert was a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post #5108.
He is survived by his three children, Robert S. Thomas (Patty), Barbara Mills (Michael), Michael G. Thomas (Elizabeth); six grandchildren, Samuel Thomas, Johnathon Thomas, Sarah Morehead, Chrissy Tanis, Chad Mills, Arrianne Baxter; six great-grandchildren, Lily Tanis, Caleb Tanis, Esther Tanis, Jacob Morehead, Brookley Baxter and Bodi Baxter.
In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Gisela Thomas (Dec. 7, 2013), whom he was married to for 62 years.
Services will be held at noon on Saturday (Feb. 8, 2014) at Hadley Funeral Home Reno Chapel, 1021 Pike St., Marietta, Ohio, 45750, with Pastor Steve Mahaffey officiating. Burial to follow in East Lawn Memorial Park with full military honors. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday (Feb. 7) at the funeral home.
