The proposed half-percent sales tax hike that would have raised $1.2 million annually for the Washington County Sheriff's Office will not be on the May 2 ballot. Secretary of State Sherrod Brown said that it is a special election rather than a primary election, therefore prohibiting a sales tax vote. Sheriff Richard D. Ellis planned to use the additional tax money to more than double the number of deputies.

Five members of the same family, each in a different phase of the scouting program, are celebrating Girl Scout Week. Mrs. Ben H. Putnam Jr. is vice president of the Marietta Girl Scout Council and leader of Troop 32; Nancy Putnam is a First Class Senior Scout and a member of Troop 64; Sarah is a First Class Scout and Cadette in Troop 32; Jane is a member of Junior Troop 26; and Emily is a member of Brownie Troop 7.

The Marietta High School basketball team won five straight games in two days to become the champions of the southern division of Ohio. As a result of this win, the players will compete with the Mansfield High School team for the championship of the entire state.
