Freddie Carpenter held off a hard charging Andy Bond to claim the AMRA Super Late Model feature Friday night on opening night in front of a huge crowd at the Legendary Hilltop Speedway.
Carpenter started on the pole and led every one of the 25 laps with Bond applying pressure in almost every single turn.
With 18 cars starting the feature on the quarter mile oval, the two leaders began to run into lapped traffic just five laps into the feature.
Bonds made a strong run at Carpenter on a restart after a caution flag on lap eight, but contact from third place driver Chris Garnes spun Bond out bringing out yet another caution.
Track officials blamed the caution flag on Garnes, leaving Bond in the runner up spot and allowing him to continue his pursuit of he leader.
Carpenter proved to be too much however as the Parkersburg native pulled away in the final few laps to claim the opening night victory.
HILLTOP SPEEDWAY RESULTS
AMRA Super Late Feature:
1. Freddie Carpenter
2. Andy Bond
3. Nick Dohm
4. Stephen Prince
5. Doug Parks.
AMRA Modified Feature:
1. Kenny Johnson
2. Jess Hartman
3. Jeremy Blake
4. Dave McWilliams
5. Jimmy Smith.
Bonds came home second, with Nick Dohm, Stephen Prince and Doug Parks rounding out the top five.
The AMRA modified feature followed a similar trait as the late model race as veteran drive Kenny Johnson chased Jeremy Blake for most of the event.
Blake started on the pole and led the early part of the race while last year's track champion Roy Roush had the jammed packed crowd on it's feet early on as he advanced from eighth to second place in just two laps.
Roush's night was short lived however as contact between himself and Johnson ended up sending him to the pits after a drive shaft issue.
Johnson continued to challenge Blake for the lead with third place Jess Hartman just behind.
Finally with just three laps to go, Johnson dove to the inside of Blake and took the lead coming off of turn four.
After clearing Blake, Johnson pulled away for the victory while Hartman managed to get around Blake as well for second place.
The race featured some seven caution flags and only five of the 15 cars that started the feature were running at the end. Hilltop will return to action next Friday night when they host a full slate of racing once again including a $2,000.00 to win AMRA Super Late Model Feature.
